Out of School Hours Sport

At St John’s our aim is to excite and inspire our students to be healthy active children. Out of School Hours Sport is run outside of regular school hours and is another opportunity that students have to be active.

Have-a-Go Programs – These are run especially for Junior Primary students. These are fun, skill based programs that enable students to learn how to play different sports without being competitive. Throughout the year the following sports are offered - basketball, soccer, netball, football (Auskick), chess, tennis, cricket and t-ball.

Sports Teams – Primary school students can get involved in a range of summer and winter sports. Thanks to huge support from parent volunteers, we are able to offer cricket, softball, tennis, chess, basketball, football, soccer and netball. Parent help plays a vital role in coaching, managing and organising these sports teams. These sports are offered subject to student interest and the number of parent helpers.

The school sports uniform must be worn at practices, matches and special competitions. We welcome parents who are able to coach, umpire or manage a sporting team. For general enquiries please contact Brett Humphrys, the Sports Coordinator and Chairperson of the Out of School Hours Sports Committee.

Please use the St John's Family Directory (previously Buzz Book) for contact telephone numbers.

Playing Sport when it is Hot or Wet Weather

On School Days

Hot Weather
Sports practices / Have-a-Go sessions will be cancelled if the forecast temperature for the day stated during the 7:30am weather report on 5AA (AM 1395) is 36 degrees celsius or more. If the forecast is for 32-35 degrees celsius, sessions will be held under shade (where practical), with reduced active play time and extra drink breaks.

Wet Weather
In the case of wet weather, sports practices / Have-a-Go sessions will be cancelled at the discretion of the coach, PE teacher, or Principal. The decision will be made by 2:30pm. Parents can ring the school after 2:30pm if they’re unsure whether practice will proceed. If practice is cancelled, it is expected that parents will organise the collection of their child or make arrangements with After School Care. In the event that parents are unaware that practice has been cancelled, their child will be sent to After School Care.

Playing Sport when it is Hot or Wet Weather

For Saturday Sports

Hot Weather
Saturday morning sport will be cancelled if the forecast temperature for Saturday (in Friday’s Advertiser) is 38 degrees celsius or more. If the forecast is for 35-37 degrees celsius, games will be played provided that there is reduced game time and players are provided with extra drink breaks.

Wet Weather
In the case of wet weather during terms 1 and 4, players are expected to attend games as scheduled and a decision will be made at the venue as to whether the conditions are safe to proceed with the match. Games will be played in wet weather during terms 2 and 3 (winter season) provided that the health and safety of players is appropriately cared for.
