Year 5
Maritime Museum Excursion
As part of our Unit of Inquiry into how 'The Inventions and Discoveries of Individuals Influence Civilisations' the Year 5 classes went on an excursion to the Maritime Museum to see an exhibition on 'The Lost Tools of Henry Hoke' - the astonishing history of Australia's greatest unrecognised inventor.
Henry Hoke was an eccentric and unique South Australian inventor, inventing such amazing items as the glass hammer, packets of rubber screws and pointless nails, the Befuddling Machine, striped and checkered paint and his controversial Random Excuse Generator.
The Year 5 students really enjoyed the exhibition and it enhanced their understanding of the unit.
Inventions and Discoveries
As part of our Unit of Inquiry on Inventions and Discoveries, students from both Year 5 classes were required to make a model of a past invention or discovery. The students researched their discovery and invention and were required to explore the following criteria...
- Why it was discovered or invented?
- How different civilisations have used it?
- How it has changed over time?
- How it has changed people's lives?
- How has it influenced civilisations?
Students then either made a modern model or drew a modern picture to show the evolution of their invention or discovery.
